Stocks sink on home data; IBM leads Dow drop

U.S. stocks open lower after a report showed the steepest drop in monthly housing starts in nearly 27 years, a reminder of the fragile U.S. housing market against a backdrop of Japan’s nuclear crisis and increasing violence in Bahrain.
