NetApp and Partners Provide Customers with Unmatched Management Simplicity and Uncompromised Performance for E-Mail, File System, SAP Solutions, and Enterprise Content Management Archive and Compliance
It's said that the only certainties in life are death and taxes; now, add compliance to the list.
Today, Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTAP) has tackled that compliance issue head on, outlining its comprehensive strategy for a unified approach to both archive and compliance by offering a product and service portfolio to help customers solve their growing and changing data challenges.
On average, 80% of enterprise information is more than one year old. Enterprise e-mail makes up 75% of corporate intellectual property, of which approximately 75% is used in litigation in the case of legal disputes. In terms of disk-based archive capacity, industry analyst firm ESG predicts an estimated total increase of 877% between 2005 and 2010. In short, more data needs to be stored for longer periods of time and for a variety of diverse business needs that did not until recently emerge as a leading concern.
The NetApp announcement challenges the industry's conventional approach of forcing customers to deploy separate storage silos for their backup, archive, compliance, and primary storage needs and urges customers to save time, money, and manpower with a unified archive and compliance solution. NetApp also announced the results of a NetApp-commissioned study conducted by VeriTest, which demonstrates the superior performance of NetApp storage in Symantec(R) Enterprise Vault(TM) e-mail archiving environments compared to EMC solutions (see www.netapp.com/news/press/news_rel_20060912a).
Additionally, NetApp Global Services (NGS) unveiled a new NetApp data assessment service, which will initially be released with limited availability. The service provides visibility into the unstructured data scattered across a company's network to help customers develop and implement data management strategies that reduce storage costs and better manage risks. The new service takes inventory of a customer's unstructured data repositories and builds a metadata database that can be used to characterize the data for future policy-based management. At the end of the service, customers are provided with a set of reports and recommendations on how to better manage and optimize their storage.
"To put it simply, NetApp gets it," said Reinoud Reynders, IT manager, Infrastructure and Operations, at University Hospitals Leuven, one of the largest services centers for healthcare in Belgium. "NetApp is providing a unified approach to tackling our archive and compliance needs that gives us the flexibility we need to manage our growth while keeping a close eye on meeting our compliance requirements. One of University Hospitals Leuven's key concerns is making sure that whatever archive and compliance solution we have in place can handle what we need in the future. The NetApp approach provides us with confidence that we have a long-term solution in place and that our data will be both protected and accessible."
"NetApp believes that a separate architecture dedicated to compliance is fundamentally the wrong approach," said Patrick Rogers, vice president of Products and Alliances at Network Appliance. "Until now, enterprises have been told that compliance requirements for data storage are so specific and complicated that they require unique, specific, and expensive storage silos. Customers need to know what this translates to in terms of increased complexity and increased costs of deploying and managing a separate architecture."
Rogers continued, "We are confident that NetApp offers the industry's best storage solution available today for e-mail archiving, particularly in Symantec Enterprise Vault environments. Our legacy continues to ring true in bringing to the marketplace solutions that simplify the management of data."
The requirements for archive and compliance are similar. With globalization, minimizing the backup window and time required to restore data is a top priority for businesses. Customers are concerned with application performance and availability, litigation support, and data discovery requirements. The internal need for information retention, security, and access controls is increasingly critical.
Standard Enterprise Capabilities to Address Compliance
Data management regulations essentially boil down to five standard storage capabilities that customers need to effectively satisfy regulations: data classification, data discovery, data migration, data permanence, and data security and privacy (see www.netapp.com/solutions/archive-compliance.html).
-- Data classification, discovery, and migration needs can be met by leveraging the NetApp IS1200 (Information Server 1200) along with IS1200 migration and retention software. The IS1200 is designed to scale to manage millions of files. Multiple servers can cluster into a single system capable of managing more than 100 million files. Multiple clusters can be deployed across the enterprise to provide integrated visibility and control of billions of files. The IS1200 minimizes customers' exposure to risk with improved visibility to address new challenges such as regulatory compliance, intellectual property protection, and leaking private information.
-- Data permanence needs are met by leveraging NetApp SnapLock(R) and LockVault(TM) software on NetApp unified storage systems -- whether that's a midrange fabric-attached storage (FAS) system in the FAS3000 series or on a NearStore(R) R-Series storage system. These solutions provide high-performance, nonrewritable, nonerasable disk storage to protect data until a specified retention date. These write once, read many (WORM) solutions for structured and unstructured data can be flexibly deployed, allowing the storage systems to be used for multiple purposes. These are open solutions that leverage industry-standard CIFS and NFS protocols to support easy data access and application integration. NetApp SnapLock and LockVault provide customers with powerful authentication, access controls, access restrictions, transmission encryption, and audit logs to protect confidential data.
-- Data security and privacy needs are met by deploying Decru(R) DataFort(TM) storage security appliances for military-grade encryption, authentication, and access control of stored data on disk or on tape. Decru, a NetApp company, also offers the Decru Lifetime Key Management(TM) system to centrally and securely manage encryption keys across the enterprise, so that data is always accessible when and where it's needed.
-- Integration with archive and compliance applications is achieved because of the open standards approach that NetApp takes with its partners, including FileNet, SAP, Symantec, and ZANTAZ. As a result, integration cost is low, there is no requirement to redo integration as archival applications change, and it is easy to integrate tailored applications.
NetApp empowers customers with the flexibility to leverage SATA and Fibre Channel disk storage systems, greatly lowering the total cost and delivering consistent -- and superior -- performance. The unique architecture enables the support of multiple protocols, retention policies, and security models within the same array. The standards-based integration with major archiving applications, such as Symantec Enterprise Vault, minimizes cost and complexity. This approach delivers today on long-term data retention needs for security, scale, access control, performance, and lower total cost of ownership.
