This week, we heard reports that employers were requesting the Facebook passwords of potential employees. Yikes! This morning, Gizmodo reported that Facebook’s chief privacy officer Erin Egan released a statement warning users not to give our their account information in this obvious invasion of privacy. In fact, Senator Richard Blumenthal is reportedly working on a bill that would make this kind of practice illegal. Thank goodness!
Twitter celebrated its 6th birthday this week, and Mashable put together a post looking back at the social network throughout the years. Among the list are the top tweets-per-second moments since Twitter launched in 2006. Topping the list was the launch of Anime movie Laputa: Castle in the Sky in Japan, followed by the last moments of this year’s Superbowl.
TechCrunch reported that Hipstamatic and Instagram will join forces, creating the first third-party app that will send photos to Instragram’s social sharing network. The writers over at TechCrunch forcast that this partnership will not only increase popularity of Instagram’s photo stream, but they also insist that this will help drive sales for Hipstamatic.
David Harry of Search Engine Watch put together a clever post about the “ugly truth” of Google’s search engine optimization. My favorite part of the post is his discussion of the “SEO inferiority complex” where he reminds marketers that they aren’t so special after all.
Lastly, I got a kick out of the drink menu at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City. Reminiscent of the infamous social media explain with donuts, the Mandarin’s drink menu offers a variety of different drinks themed after social sites.
