Tokyo, Apr 13, 2012 - (JCN Newswire) - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today a partnership with eleven other companies, Stanford University and the University of California Berkeley, and joined the Open Networking Research Center (ONRC) to explore software-defined networking (SDN) as a new paradigm and to provide open-source SDN infrastructure in support of networking.
The center includes two research groups at Berkley and Stanford as well as a new non-profit networking laboratory called Open Networking Lab (ON.Lab). Including NEC, a consortium of twelve of the world's foremost networking companies are the founding sponsors of the center. For more information on the consortium, please see the following release from the ONRC:(http://onrc.stanford.edu/pdf/ONRC-Launch_120410.pdf ).
"We are delighted to see growing interest and support from companies in Software Defined Networking," said Guru Parulkar, executive director of the ONRC and ON.Lab. "NEC has been a sponsor of our research and a key partner since 2007 and we are happy to see NEC continue its support with the new center as we take SDN to the next level." The Open Networking Research Center is charged with developing a comprehensive intellectual framework for this new era of networking. The ONRC includes three components: The networking research groups located at Stanford University and UC Berkeley, headed by Professor Nick McKeown and Professor Scott Shenker, respectively; and an independent, non-profit Open Networking Laboratory led by Guru Parulkar that will develop an open-source SDN infrastructure.
NEC has been working closely with the research team at Stanford as a member of the Clean Slate Program and the Clean Slate Laboratories, and has also worked with the team extensively on OpenFlow technology, the key enabling technology of SDN. NEC has leveraged its experience to introduce the "UNIVERGE PF Series (ProgrammableFlow)," the world's first next generation network products equipped with OpenFlow technologies.
As a member of the ONRC, NEC will continue supporting the next phase of SDN development.
