UnitedHealthcare expects to hire 335 employees in the Baltimore area in 2012 following its recent acquisition of XLHealth, a Baltimore-based provider of Medicare Advantage health plans focused on underserved and chronically ill beneficiaries.
The new jobs will support UnitedHealthcare’s expansion of XLHealth’s chronic care management capabilities that will bring innovative new services to Medicare beneficiaries in Maryland and across the country.
Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley joined UnitedHealth Group President and CEO Stephen J. Hemsley and UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement Chief Government Relations Officer Paul Serini today at UnitedHealthcare’s Warehouse at Camden Yards location for an announcement regarding the company’s expansion in Maryland.

The 335 new positions will be split between UnitedHealthcare’s existing offices in Baltimore and a new location in Elkridge, Md.
About 250 of the newly created jobs will enable UnitedHealthcare to expand its HouseCalls program, a unique clinical service that assesses the health condition of Medicare beneficiaries with complex health needs and identifies gaps in their care. HouseCalls includes in-home visits by nurse practitioners or other qualified clinicians who coordinate and supplement the care provided by a beneficiary’s primary care physician or other providers.
Another 85 new hires will support a pharmacist counseling program designed to help UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage members take their medications as prescribed. This initiative provides members with personalized counseling from a specialty-trained plan pharmacist to help them understand their medication regimen and take their medications as directed by their physicians. When appropriate, members are referred to programs that can help them afford their medications.
