DRAM Oversupply Persists on PC Breakdown, Says Bernstein

Bernstein Research’s Mark Newman last night became the latest Street prognosticator to argue that PC sales are trending toward zero growth, leading him to conclude that the supply and demand situation for the DRAM memory chips that go into PCs won’t improve until perhaps the second quarter of next year. Writes Newman, We grow increasingly bearish on PC shipments and lower 2012 YoY growth from 3% to 0%; and reflect recent production cuts by DRAM players. We further reduce PC DRAM demand forecasts in the near term based on anemic sales in the build up to Windows 8 release. This year, we now see 0% growth in PC units YoY, but see continued strong growth in Mobile DRAM demand powered by Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5. You’ll recall that Barclays Capital ‘s Ben Reitzes on Tuesday cut his PC unit growth estimate this year from 3% to zero. As a consequence, writes Newman, Our updated supply/demand analysis shows oversupply continuing in PC DRAM for Q3, with a permanent recovery not happening until 2H 2013. Mobile DRAM continues to be a bright spot with relative balance. Indeed, Newman notes that the rise in smartphones such as Samsung Electronics’s “ Galaxy S III ” and Apple ‘s ( AAPL ) next iPhone , which have increasing need for DRAM, means that mobile DRAM demand will exceed PC DRAM demand for the first time ever this year, with the mobile stuff making up 40% of total demand, compared to just 28% for the PC kind.
