The European Union funded campaign Flavor Your Life shares some uses of olive oil, besides cooking, that have been used throughout history and during present times.
The Greeks, who worshiped the Goddess Athena for creating the olive tree, used olive oil in numerous ways besides cooking. Herbs and flowers were added to olive oil to create cologne or fragrance. It was common for the Greeks to anoint themselves with it, and many bachelors would often carry it on their belt or wrists. The Greeks also used olive oil as a gift or trophy. In games, such as the ones held for Zeus at Olympia, the winning athletes were prized with olive oil jars and massaged with oils. They were also crowned with olive branches.
Egyptians used olive oil in the process of mummification. Bodies that were awaiting mummification were anointed with olive oil. Individuals involved in the mummification process were not allowed to approach unless their hair, face and feet were anointed with olive oil.
Today, it is still common to see olive oil being used to anoint followers in certain sacraments. In certain religious practices, olive oil may be used for baptism, confirmation and as a treatment for the sick and ill.
Carol Firenze, author of the Passionate Olive, shares how olive oil is commonly used today as a beauty product. "One of my favorite uses of extra virgin olive oil is to exfoliate with an olive oil salt glow," she says. "Mix ½ cup extra virgin olive oil alone or in combination with a few drops of lavender or geranium oil, and 1 teaspoon (or more) of coarse sea salt. Massage your skin in a circular motion and shower. Using this olive oil scrub will make your skin feel smooth instantly. For the face, I use sugar and olive oil."
