RE2, Inc., a leading provider of JAUS software solutions and unmanned systems technologies, announced today that it has been selected by Energid Technologies as a subcontractor for the Army's Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) STTR program entitled, "Advanced Robotic Detection of Chemical/Biological Agents, Toxic Industrial Gases, and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) for Force Health Protection."
The detection and identification of bio and chemical warfare agents, as well as toxic industrial gases and IEDs, is critical for protecting medical first responders both on the battlefield and at home. Therefore, the Army's TATRC developed this STTR program with the objective to design an inexpensive, field portable detection and identification robot for chemical & biological agents, industrial toxic gases, and chemical components of IEDs and integrate it with JAUS-compliant unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs).
RE2's primary objective is to architect a JAUS-compliant communication infrastructure allowing for plug-n-play sensors and manipulator payloads on small UGVs. "Today's small unmanned vehicle platforms have been tested and proven. Now we must concentrate on creating low-cost plug-n-play payloads that are useful for a variety of tasks," stated Jorgen Pedersen, president and chief executive officer for RE2, Inc. "By developing a JAUS-compliant chemical and biological detection and identification system, we can improve the capabilities of our first responders while adding value to existing UGV platforms."
"Quick, reliable, and safe detection of chem-bio agents is imperative for first responders who often put themselves at risk by entering disaster sites blind. Energid will design a dexterous manipulator for assay collection and airborne detection, a semi-autonomous chem-bio agent detection process and an integrated teleoperation-enable mobile robotic system using iRobot's PackBot platform. RE2's JAUS expertise is imperative to this program and will be instrumental in developing a JAUS-compliant interoperable sensor system which will facilitate operation from any existing JAUS-compliant controller," remarked Dr. John Hu, director, medical robotics and systems, Energid Technologies.
JAUS is a DoD-mandated software messaging protocol developed to establish a communications standard for unmanned systems. The JAUS Working Group was chartered in 1998 by the DoD's Joint Robotics Program to create the JAUS standards, gain UGV community acceptance, and expand the architecture.
RE2 has extensive experience creating and integrating JAUS-compliant systems utilizing its RE2 JAUS SDK. For example, RE2 is partnered with Carnegie Mellon to develop JAUS-compliant software for the Robotic Systems Joint Project Office Gladiator Tactical Ground Vehicle (TUGV) program.
