Monotype Imaging Inc. (Nasdaq: TYPE), a leading global provider of text imaging solutions, has announced the Soho® Gothic typeface family. The new offering expands the range of fonts based on the Soho design, introduced last year as a 40-font collection – one of the company’s largest typeface families ever released.

Developed between 2004 and 2007 by Sebastian Lester of Monotype Imaging Ltd., the Soho Gothic family consists of seven sans serif weights and corresponding italics. “I wanted the family as a whole to look effortlessly modern and state-of-the-art,” said Lester. “The designs were developed in tandem so I could carefully work every aspect of the project and ensure that used together the designs would complement each other as well as possible.”

Designed to harmonize with Monotype Imaging’s slab serif Soho fonts, the Soho Gothic fonts are intended to work at all sizes for print and on-screen use. “Soho Gothic will appeal to designers and developers looking for type that offers a look that’s clean, precise and uncluttered. I wanted a mature and refined design that would perform as well being used as the backbone of a global brand as it would in an edgy fashion magazine,” Lester said.

The Soho Gothic design features stylistic alternates, which have been an intrinsic part of the Soho project, according to Robin Nicholas, head of typography at Monotype Imaging’s UK subsidiary. “Stylistic alternates give designers greater flexibility and simply make a typeface more useful,” he said. “The stylistic sets in these fonts bridge the gap between Soho and Soho Gothic with a suite of semi-slab alternates that are accessible through some of the 25 OpenType® features of Soho Gothic.”
