Transportation Research Board Calls For Development Of Mobility Management Centers
Regional Coordination Crucial, Independent Study Says. Trapeze Solutions Can Help Integrate Multi Modal, Inter Agency Transportation

TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/17/12 -- The Transportation Research Board of the National Academies (TRB) has released a new study titled "Developing Regional Mobility Management Centers." In this study, TRB calls for the creation of mobility management centers and describes how to integrate the capabilities of multiple software applications for scheduling and dispatching paratransit services so that they can transfer information seamlessly to each other.

According to TRB, the viability of community-wide, centralized regional transportation information services needs to be enhanced. This, the study argues, could enable the possibility of a wider range of organizational options for maximizing transportation service delivery, including coordinated and brokered transportation services. TRB states that this could improve the cost-effectiveness of the transit and paratransit services. The study concludes by noting that software applications ought to be developed that address the need for data interoperability for scheduling and dispatching for the paratransit and transit industry.

"It's very interesting and thoroughly conducted research," said Jarrod Clark, Trapeze's Director of Demand Response Products. "The report verifies everything we have been working on with our customers such as the Portage Area Regional Transportation Authority (PARTA), to address one of their major pain points. In fact, Trapeze has created a solution that does just what the TRB has recommended. The solution is called Trapeze Community Connect, or TCC," Clark added.

TCC was developed to meet the goals of the United We Ride initiative, coordinating and integrating neighboring paratransit operations. TCC allows agencies to tap into other regional resources to offer their customers the best public transit routes available in their area. Doug Wagener, Director of Mobility Management at PARTA, explains why the agency has been working with Trapeze on creating TCC: "From the beginning, Trapeze shared our vision of true coordination. We thought it critical that the application be both scalable and replicable. We also felt it critical that it would invite interoperability by working with any other software program used by any transit property or community agency. They embraced these principles and more. We are very excited about the TCC and its deployment in our local coordinated program called NEORide."

TCC connects agencies running existing Trapeze or third party scheduling solutions. Agencies don't need to make major policy changes or combine complex data to get regional scheduling solutions. Agencies can continue to run their respective autonomous rules, as TCC considers those rules during schedule generation. Upon query, instead of possible trips limited to one agency, customers receive various options from all transport agencies and all available modes of transport in their region. Requests for trips across agencies are managed, locked, and distributed via TCC.

Part of the Transit IDEAS (Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis) Initiative, the study has been conducted by Westat on behalf of the TRB.
