Internationally recognized researcher Dr. Jeanne Loring receives $150,000 grant

Millipore Corporation (MIL), a Life Science leader providing technologies, tools and services for bioscience research and biopharmaceutical manufacturing, today awarded Dr. Jeanne Loring, Ph.D. a $150,000 grant for her work in stem cell research at The Scripps Research Institute of California. The funds will support Dr. Lorings investigation of human pluripotent stem cells, which hold great promise for drug development and cell therapy.

Through this grant, we are able to support innovative stem cell research projects that we believe may be the key to solving a number of human health issues, said Martin Madaus, Chairman and CEO of Millipore Corporation. We are pleased to offer this grant to Dr. Loring, who exemplifies the ground-breaking nature of this award through her extensive work in the stem cell field.

Dr. Jeanne Loring is a distinguished researcher and founding director at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA. Prior to joining Scripps in October 2007, she was on the faculty of the Burnham Institute for Medical Research as a principal investigator in January 2004 and was one of the principal architects of Burnham's successful human embryonic stem cell program.

Stem cells are a crucial component to understanding and addressing diseases such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons which impact millions of people, says Dr. Loring. "It is imperative to continue our investigation in this field and I am pleased to have Millipores support.

Dr. Loring is studying gene-regulating molecules known as microRNAs in relation to the ability of stem cells to self renew and to develop into diverse cell types. She has a B.S. in Molecular Biology from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in Developmental Neurobiology from the University of Oregon.

This is the first major grant that Millipore has offered for stem cell research on the West Coast. The award is offered in increments of $50,000 a year for three years and is renewed each year at Millipores discretion. Madaus made the award presentation at the BIO 2008 Convention being held this week in San Diego, California The grant is funded through the Millipore Corporate Giving Program. Also present were senior executives and scientists from Millipores Temecula, California Bioscience headquarters.

As a leading provider of technologies, tools and services for the global Life Science industry, Millipore is committed to improving human health by supporting all facets of biomedical research. Millipore is investing significant resources in the advancement of stem cell research. In addition to the companys own dedicated teams of scientists, many of whom have worked in leading human stem cell labs, Millipore has sponsored stem cell research and training programs around the world, from the Burnham Institute in San Diego, to the Australian Stem Cell Center in Melbourne and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute in Boston, Massachusetts.
