March 27, 2008 - Boyd Gaming: Screwed in Vegas
It's no secret that casino stocks suffer during economic downturns, but Boyd Gaming (NYSE:BYD) will get hit harder than most. Unlike competitors Wynn (NASDAQ:WYNN) and Las Vegas Sands (NYSE:LVS), which focus on the higher end of the market and the fast-growing Chinese gambling destination Macau, or Harrah's (NYSE:HET), which is the most geographically diverse casino company, 60% of Boyd's revenue comes from Las Vegas and lower-end properties at that - hotel rooms at Boyd-operated casinos averaged under $100 / night in 2006 compared to over $200 for Las Vegas Sands.
In addition, Boyd has built up a profitable, niche clientele of out-of-towners flying in from Hawaii. Problem is, airlines are cutting flight into Las Vegas left and right because they lose money on these flights with oil above $100 a barrel. That's sure to further reduce Boyd's occupancy, at a time when they need cash to finance the constructiong of their next big Vegas casino - The Echelon.

Today's Key Market News - F Day
Stocks generally rose today in Asia and are trading higher in Europe, following U.S. market strength on Monday. American shares benefited from anticipation of today's Federal Open Market Committee meeting, and its resulting policy decision and statement. The market is actively pricing in the likelihood of Fed inaction on rates, with a new focus on liquidity and economic growth, and less attention to inflation. We expect the Fed will continue to stress its interest in controlling inflation, but will also address the credit crunch and it's willingness to come to the rescue with expansionary action if necessary. We would like to see the Fed strongly word its attentiveness to the current credit crisis, as the system needs restored confidence in the Federal Reserve at this point
We will discuss productivity, ICSC figures and other data in "Today's Coffee," which will follow. In other news, Microsoft (
